Bio-oriented Technology Research Advancement Institution (BRAIN), a semi-governmental organization funded by the Government of Japan (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Ministry of Finance) and private sector organizations, was established by the reorganization of Institute of Agricultural Machinery in 1986.
The objective of BRAIN is to promote R & D on biosciences and bio-technology
in the field of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, brewery & fermentation
and food processing, and also to conduct R & D on agricultural mechanization.
| The main functions of BRAIN are as follows; | |
| 1) | To promote biotechnolgy and related industries through loans or investment to organizations affiliated to the private sector and local governments, |
| 2) | To conduct research on the design of advanced agricultural machinery, to develop technologies for improving agricultural machinery, and to conduct testing and evaluation of agricultural machinery, |
| 3) | To promote agricultural research and development to develop advanced farmer-oriented technology through research contracts with organizations affiliated to the private sector, |
| 4) | To promote basic research activities for innovative biosciences through contract or collaborative research with research teams from universities, public institutions, and other research organizations, |
| 5) | To supply research information relating to biosciences and bio-technology. |
